Why Should We Consume Local Foods
Local food, is decidedly better for you in terms of health, taste and perhaps even the pocket. I’m sure fresh coconut water or naryalpani, will be at a better price in coastal areas, than compared to plains..and will be far more fresh for sure.
So, lets discuss about the whys and hows of the local food.
Local foods are a boon to the environment
A large variety of foods are shipped around the world. This means, a lot of packaging is required for transport and of course the transport entails using fossil fuels. Let’s try to minimise our environment effect as much as we can.
Local Foods Are Fresh
Well, no brainer of course. If we eat what we grow, it is certainly going to be fresh. The local produce available locally is generally consumed with few days of being bought. I’m sure the salad that you make with locally available products, would be tastier and healthier than the salad made with avocado swhich would not have been grown in your area.
Local Foods Help Us Eat Seasonal
When we eat the seasonal locally grown food, its at its best quality and as per the grannies old recipes avoids a lot of ailments and diseases prevalent in that season within the region. Ever heard of aam panna as panacea to avoid heat stroke.
Local Foods Are Safer
Well, if the food has zero preservatives, it is safe. Right? I will quote the naryal pani or coconut water example again. The coconut water enjoyed by the people in coastal area is fresher. By the time it reaches non-coastal areas, even the ‘fresh’ coconut water is less fresh.
Local Food Supports Your Economy
When you buy and consume locally grown food, automatically you are adding to the economy of the place. It’s much better to support a place where you stay in, and be a reason for its prosperity.
You support the smaller farmers as well, and it’s a great feeling to give back to the place we live in.
Local Food Is Tastier
If you are not convinced with the reasons stated above, this one should convince you. The local recipes and age improved ways to cook the indigenously available produce makes all the difference. There are styles of cooking fish in Awadhi style also, but none compares to the fish dishes you will encounter in Kolkata, yumm!
By eating local food, we not only enhance the environment, but also boost our health and economy. I hope you are satisfied with my top reasons to eat locally grown food. Would love to know your thoughts.
